European Ramp Safety Award for Aviance
During the 11th annual Ground handling International Conference, which took place in Sorrento (Italy), Aviance received the 2009 European Ramp Safety Award.
This was a way to pay tribute to an Aviance employee at Manchester. He was proceeding to collect baggage for an outbound flight with an electric baggage towing vehicle. He entered the building with the vehicle to hook up the trailer of bags but as he got out of the vehicle, he could smell burning. He then asked a member of staff close by if they could smell anything.

He duly collected the paperwork to process the flight manifest for the flight. On his return, the smell was still present, which then turned into black smoke. He quickly unhooked the trailer and shouted for the other member of staff to call the emergency services as he attempted to drive the vehicle out of the building.
On his way out, the vehicle caught fire. He then moved the vehicle to what he thought was a safe position, vacated the EBT and isolated the area until the emergency services arrived.
The Award was sponsored by ARINC.
